Seven Deadly Sins of Building Security

This luridly titled article from http://www.csoonline.com/ describes several of my professional pet peeves.  How many of the seven deadly sins of building security can the bad guys find at your facility?

Securing the Unoccupied Building

Until the economic recovery is in full swing some of us may need to secure unoccupied buildings.  This concise article from http://www.securitymagazine.com/ offers some useful suggestions.

Welcome to Traffic Calming in Minnesota

Earlier this year I did some research to see what others have done to reduce vehicle speeds in parking ramps.  I learned that the University of Minnesota has a traffic calming program.  Nice people, interesting tools, and fresh ideas.

Creating Defensible Space

Did you know the book Creating Defensible Space is available for free?  This Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) classic can be downloaded in its entirety at http://www.defensiblespace.com/  If you are responsible for the built environment or security at your company you must read this book.

An Emergency Planning Guide For Facilities

Here's a nice little article on emergency preparedness at your facility.

ASIS Minnesota

Are you a member of ASIS?  Did you know there is an active local chapter of ASIS?  ASIS Minnesota Chapter #25 invites you to visit its website and contact local chapter officers if you have any questions about joining ASIS and becoming active in ASIS Minnesota.

B.S. in Security Management offered in Minneapolis

In case you or a member of your security staff are looking for a degree or certificate in security management I* refer you to Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's School of Professional and Graduate Programs' bachelor's degree completion program or their undergraduate certificate program

*By way of self-disclosure I am an instructor in this program, so don't take only my word for it, contact Program Director Lora Setter for more details.

And then there's Marcus Ranum

If you enjoyed visiting Bruce Schneier's site - or at least found it professionally challenging - you're probably the sort of person who'll also appreciate Marcus Ranum.  His site contains an interesting article on "security disasters" to get you started.  Be sure to poke around; Ranum has lot's of opinions to share.

394 Block Club blog introduction

Good afternoon,

My name is Michael Brady.  I work for Nick Luciano at Hannon Security Services Inc. My primary client is Allianz Life located in Golden Valley at Hwy 100 and I-394.  Nick has also asked me to get involved in the 394 Block Club. Nicole Nelson and I talked earlier this year about finding additional ways to get hold of members and the public. I set up this blog to see if it can be another effective method to reach out to our West Metro community.

Law enforcement members from 394 corridor communities will be able to generate and edit posts. Members of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/394-Block-Club are invited to read and respond to posts. This could be a members-only blog but I recommend it be readable by the public at large.  Google registration will be required to post however.

None of this costs the 394 Block Club, our companies, or our agencies anything. Neither does it require any particular commitment on your part. If you can use this tool - great; if not - no harm, no foul. This is my first effort at blogging so please bear with me and please don't hesitate to share any tricks you've learned about using this technology.

Thanks.

Michael Brady, CPP
